American Football is Alive in Waterford Ireland

Last weekend, I was alerted by a Facebook post that there is an American Football team in Waterford, Ireland. Being a fan of the game, I took the opportunity to attend my first live game.

The opponents were the Meath Bulldogs, in the semi-final match, an achievement as the team only joined the full contact Irish American Football League four years earlier in 2011.

Played on what could be described as a park pitch, the game was played in a great spirit, warmly supported by a friendly group of both home and away supporters.

There are a few differences between what I an used to watching the game on TV and the way the game is played in Waterford. Without a scoreboard and an audible Referee, it can be a little difficult to keep up with the game. This confusion heightens as the teams both attacked the same goal, rotating when possession changes. This may just be a local ground rule, as if kicking towards one end, balls would of been lost.

The game itself was tightly contested. Both teams employing a heavily biased running game (both teams quarterbacks appeared to have weaker throwing arms than you might be used to from watching on TV) with the Waterford Wolves defence two interceptions helping them to a 13-9 win.

If your interested in the game of American Football, and have an Irish American Football team nearby, check them out, it will be an enjoyable afternoon.
